Obsidian Architecture - high-end residential architecture & custom home design in central Oregon and beyond

Mitch Darby, Architect

Welcome to Obsidian Architecture - a boutique-style architectural firm based in Bend, Oregon. My name is Mitch Darby and I am a licensed architect in central Oregon with over twenty years of professional design experience. In the first part of my career, with other architects, I was exposed to a wide variety of project types. I have worked on the design of the smallest garage remodel to multi-million dollar urban high-rises. On my own since 2013, I am a custom home or residential architect. I specialize in high-end residential architecture and custom home design; providing unique designs for unique clients.

Custom Home Design & The Architectural Difference

There are a number of differences between custom home designers and residential architects. A custom home designer is adept at emulating existing styles and producing designs that are fairly conventional. Architects, on the other hand, have been educated and conditioned to move beyond the expected, run-of-the-mill designs.  Where a custom home designer might propose a boxy design with traditional windows and a symmetrical gable roof, an architect might opt for a more interesting asymmetrical solution with full-height glazing and a more dramatic shed roof. Because of the depth of their education, architects have a greater knowledge base than designers upon which to draw from. That is just one example of a number of differences between Architects Vs. Designers.

Unlike production home designs taken from plan books or from custom home designers, the projects I take on are entirely bespoke to their owners. I am involved from the initial design consultation to the construction documents (detailed architectural drawings and specifications). And I remain involved on through construction – assisting both home owner and contractor as the architectural design becomes a reality. Most custom home designers step away from the project after the plans have been drawn.

Like many architectural firms, Obsidian Architecture takes full advantage of the latest parametric 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) design technology to maximize project coordination and minimize costly errors that can slow down or even derail the construction process. A happy by-product of this software is the production of a virtual model – which can often illustrate architectural design ideas and spatial concepts better than a traditional two-dimensional drawing.
